Connect With Us
The Department of Theatre and Dance is on the move! Theatre on the Move (TOTM) is MSU’s touring acting company. TOTM performs shows at middle and high schools in the New Jersey/New York area.
TOTM’s mission is to extend MSU’s community outreach. Our touring company takes theatre, featuring contemporary social issues, to schools throughout the state.
TOTM’s adventure began in Fall 2011 with the world premiere of a play that commemorated the 10th anniversary of September 11th by exploring the teenage experience in the post 9/11 world.
In Spring 2012, TOTM toured Bullies ‘R Us to high school and middle schools. This unique performance included short scenes and personal anecdotes that highlighted teenaged bullying. After the performance, students voiced their own opinions and personal experiences in a talkback session with the actors.
In Spring 2013, TOTM created Breaking the Cycle. With humor juxtaposed with serious content, Breaking the Cycle showcased improvised scenes created by the company’s actors along with scripted scenes specifically written for teen audiences.
What’s next for TOTM?
Because of the show’s growing popularity, we will now have Fall performance dates in addition to Spring performance dates. For the Spring 2017, we will once again create a brand new exciting and engaging anti-bullying show which is designed specifically for middle and high school audiences.
Does the show change from year to year?
Yes. Each season, an MSU director reworks the show with a new company of MSU student actors.
What is Breaking the Cycle?
Breaking the Cycle is a 35 minute show comprised of two to three minute scenes that center on the full range of the teenage bullying experience. It is built around the theme of victim empowerment and allows students to recognize that everyone can both bully and be bullied. Topics include adult and peer pressure; cyber-bullying; “sexting”; verbal, emotional, and sexual abuse; suicide prevention; gender and sexual identity; body image and more. Students share their feedback about the performance in a talkback session led by the actors. Students may also discuss actor training opportunities at MSU with the actors.

How much does hosting a performance cost?
We are committed to providing reasonably-priced in-school theatre for your students:
Does my school need to have a stage?
No! We do performances in various types of spaces. We need a 15’ x 15’ performance area and can perform in black boxes, auditoriums, classrooms, and other spaces for audiences of up to 150 students. Our show works best in an intimate environment to ensure that students feel safe during the performance and talkback.
Do you host performances at MSU?
What teachers had to say about Breaking the Cycle:
“The performance, which was extremely well done, addressed many of the real life issues our middle school students face all of the time. The scenes performed provoked meaningful conversations in the talkback session that followed and made a lasting impression on our 7th graders.”
~Jane S. Parkinson, School Counselor. Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School
“I enjoyed the creative manner in which sensitive topics were addressed. The performance was very engaging.”
~Treniere Dobson, Principal. Infinity Institute Jersey City Public Schools
“The fact that anyone can be a bully and at some point, everyone has been a bully was most relevant to my students.”
~Dan Sherwood, Drama Advisor. Gretta Ostrovsky Middle School, Wood-Ridge New Jersey
