Network Access and Registration

Montclair State's Division of Information Technology recommends that all faculty, students, and staff use the MSU-Secure network ID to connect to the campus wireless network.

Montclair State offers both secure (encrypted) and open (non-encrypted) wireless networks on campus. The difference between the secure and open wireless networks is that the secure wireless network will encrypt the internet traffic from your computer to the wireless access point using the WPA2 protocol. Older devices and operating systems that are not able to connect to the secure network can still connect to the open non-encrypted network, but IT recommends always connecting to the secure network if your device is capable of doing so.

These are the wireless networks (or 'SSIDs') on campus to choose from:

Wireless Networks

  • MSU-Secure - The MSU-Secure network is the recommended option for anyone with a MSU NetID. Most modern wireless devices are capable of using WPA2 encryption.
  • MSU-WiFi - The MSU-WiFi network is for older computers and devices that are not capable of using WPA2 encryption.
  • MSU-Guest - The MSU-Guest network is intended only for temporary visitors to campus (i.e. attendees of a workshop or event) who do not have an MSU NetID account. The MSU-Guest network is intended to provide convenient access to the Internet for web browsing and other common activities for a period of 24 hours and is an open, non-encrypted network.

Wired Networks

MSU-Wired - Connecting to MSU-Wired requires a one-time setup. The steps for connecting to MSU-Wired are identical for all browsers and platforms.

Gaming Devices, Smart TVs, Etc.

Gaming devices, Smart TVs, Media Players, and other internet capable devices may be registered to the network via the My Devices Portal.

Members of the University may register up to 10 devices through this portal. In order to register your device, its Mac address is needed. IT recommends checking manufacturers' websites to learn how to obtain Mac addresses for particular devices.

Step-by-step instructions for adding new devices may be found at the My Devices Portal Documentation page.
